It’s that time of year when bbqs are planned, friends and family gather, and fireworks light up the night sky. While these festivities are a delight to us, it can be a very scary time for pets. In fact, more pets go missing during the 4th of July celebration period than any other time of the year.
While not all animals are affected, help ensure your pet’s safety with these helpful tips.
- Keep Pets Indoors
- Don’t bring your pets outside during the fireworks, even if you have a fenced yard! Loud and unpredictable noises can easily startle your pet and cause them to panic or run.
- Provide a Comfortable, Safe Space
- Prepare a safe place for your pet, like a quiet room or crate to help them feel secure. Make sure the pet always has access to this space and make it extra enticing with blankets to burrow in. Draw any window coverings to help minimize light flashes.
- Give Them Distractions
- Treat toys filled with a favorite snack or a long lasting chew can help keep your pet distracted from the commotion. Calming music or white noise (like a tv or fan) can also help provide distraction.
- Update Their Microchips and IDs
- Pet’s should be wearing an identification tag with current contact information (just in case). Double check that your pet’s microchip information is up-to-date.
- Walk Your Dog Early in the Day
- Take your dog for a nice long walk during daylight hours when fireworks are less likely to occur. This can help with your pet’s energy level later on. Remember, some fireworks can start early, so always make sure your pet is on a lead.
