The official start of summer has come and gone and the loudest holiday of the year is right around the corner: 4th of July. While the beautiful display of lights and sounds (aka fireworks) entertain humans, for your furry companion it can be terrifying. High-pitched squeals, thundering booms and bright flashing lights can cause send even the bravest dog into flight mode. Actually, more pets run away on the fourth of July than any other day of the year.

So, what can you do to ensure your furry companion is keep safe and sound? Here are some tips to surviving (and even enjoying) the holiday safely.

  • Prepare a quiet, safe space for your dog to relax in during the festivities. It is best if this space is away from windows or doors. Make sure if it is out of site, you check-in every hour or so to make sure your companion is doing alright.
  • Keep your dog indoors, even if your yard is fenced in. A frightened dog can get through if motivated enough. Close any blinds or curtains to help keep out bright lights and muffle noise.
  • Try to get as much exercise in as possible earlier in the day before any festivities begin.
  • Play some soothing music leading up to and during the fireworks. Think classical piano or spa sounds.
  • Give a frozen kong to help your pooch concentrate on something other than what is scaring them. (you can find some of our trainer Maria Huntoon’s favorite Kong recipes here).
