Lost & Found Pets

Losing a pet is scary. Take quick action and follow these steps for the best chance of reunion.

What to do

If you LOST your pet…

STEP 1
Walk the Neighborhood

Take a walk around the immediate area and speak to any neighbors, postal service workers, landscapers, or anyone who may have seen your lost pet. You know your pet best, so look in areas that your pet may have been interested in or comfortable hiding in. Most pets are found close to home.

STEP 2
Share their Scent

Put a couple of your pet’s favorite items near the most common entry ways into your home. The front door and the door into your yard would be the best locations. You can include items like their favorite bed, blanket, toys, their litterbox (if cat) and any other items they use frequently. Their scents may help them find their way home.

STEP 3
Search for your pet on Petco Love Lost

One Love have partnered with Petco Love Lost to easily help search the national ‘lost and found database’ and create a searchable/shareable alert for your missing pet. Upload a a picture of your pet or searching by location. Powered by facial recognition technology, Petco Love Lost helps match found animals to reported lost pets nationwide. Visit Petco Love Lost and search now!

STEP 4
Register Your Pet

If you haven’t done so already, be sure to register your pet on Petco Love Lost to do things like create a Lost listing that can be shared and print out premade fliers. You can also receive fliers via text message or email.

STEP 5
Use the ‘sharing features’ on Petco Love Lost to distribute your lost pet listing on social media outlets like Facebook, Craigslist, and Nextdoor. If you are local to the Savannah area, make sure to post on the Lost & Found Pets in Savannah, Georgia facebook group.

STEP 6
Update Microchip

If your pet has a microchip, call the microchip company to update your information and let them know that your pet is missing. If a finder takes your missing pet to be scanned for a microchip, you want to make sure that all the information is correct so that you will be contacted immediately.

STEP 7
Check Local Animal Services
Call or visit your local Animal Control, Shelters and Humane Society to see if your missing pet is at one of these locations. An in-person trip is preferable so you can look and see if your pet is in their care. Many organizations allow you to place a lost report with them, where you can leave a photo of your pet and your contact information.

STEP 8
Register Lost Pet at Chatham90
Chatham 90
is an local alliance of animal shelters, rescues, veterinarians and volunteers working to connect lost pets and their families.

If you FOUND a pet…

If you find a dog or cat your first instinct may be to call Animal Services or bring it to the County Shelter – but once at the shelter the chances of reuniting the animal with its owner decrease and the risk of euthanasia increases. Most missing pets are found close to home – remember many animals are lost, not stray.

Please Note If you cannot help look for the owner, in some cases leaving the animal “alone” may even be better than taking to the shelter, unless the animal is in immediate danger or in need of veterinary care. Taking a photo and posting it online can be a better alternative (see step 3 below). If a found cat is healthy and has an “ear tip” (the tip of one ear is missing), it means that the cat is a stray or outdoor cat (aka community cat) and should be left alone.

Please follow the steps listed below to help reunite the pet with its owner.

STEP 1
Check for an ID tag on the pet’s collar

If the pet is wearing a collar with an ID tag or address, call the owner or take the animal to the address listed.

STEP 2
Walk your neighborhood and talk to neighbors
Check around the area where the animal has been found to see if you can locate the owner or if neighbors know where the animal belongs. Leash a found dog and walk around with the dog.

STEP 3
Post on Social Media
We recommend posting a photo of the pet and the location it was found on the Lost & Found Pets in Savannah, Georgia. This group is very active and has a large following and posting here will alert thousands of individuals in the area. You can also post the same information in neighborhood specific Facebook groups and Nextdoor.

STEP 4
Check the Chatham 90 Lost Pet Report Page
Visit our Lost Pets Page to see if the pet’s owner has submitted a lost pet report to Chatham County.

STEP 5
Check for a Microchip

Some pets will have a microchip implanted under their skin that can give you access to the owners information. Many locations in Chatham County have microchip scanners that can read the microchips ID and give you the owner’s contact information. You can find the microchip scanning location nearest to you on our Microchip Scanner Map.

STEP 6
File a report with Chatham County Animal Services
You must file a found animal report with Chatham County Animal Services. This report acts as the official notification to the County and starts the 5 day stray hold for both cats and dogs. Found dogs and cats can be kept at the home of the person who found them provided a found pet report is filed and they actively search for owner. When filling out the report please specify if the pet is microchipped as staff will try to track down the owner in cases where microchips are unregistered. If the microchip is not registered, it is still possible for Animal Services to track down the owner as certain agencies have access to more information regarding microchips than the general public. At the end of the 5-day hold, you can assume ownership of the animal, re-home the animal or work with a shelter/rescue. See our spay/neuter and wellness pages for low-cost veterinary care options in our area.
