Need Help with your Foster?

We’re here to help! From food, medical care and beyond, OLAR support’s all our dedicated Foster Parents.

Thank you for opening up your home to a foster animal. You’re giving them something they may have never known before—a safe, stable, and loving environment. Many of the dogs and cats we rescue have experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment, and your care plays a crucial role in their healing.

Foster Parents also help animals build social skills and learn basic training, making them more adoptable and better prepared for life with their future families. You’re doing a great job! Need help with anything? Check out the information below and always feel free to reach out to your designated Adoption Coordinator.

Need to Know

1 Getting Started
Before fostering, all prospective Foster Homes must complete the online Foster Home Agreement and pass a home inspection.

2 Primary Responsibility
Foster families are expected to provide daily care, love, and shelter for their foster cat or dog until a permanent home is found.

3 Support from One Love
One Love covers all approved veterinary care and necessary supplies for foster pets—subject to available funding. Contact your Foster Coordinator for any additional supplies needed.

4 Veterinary Care
All medical care must be provided by a One Love-approved veterinarian. If your foster pet needs veterinary attention or any medications (including over-the-counter), please contact your Foster Coordinator before proceeding.

5 Adoption Events
and Meet-and-Greets
Foster Homes must bring their foster pets to adoption events at least twice per month and be available for meet-and-greet appointments with potential adopters when given reasonable notice. For safety, never invite potential adopters to your home.

6 Ongoing Communication
Foster families must keep the One Love Foster Coordinator updated on the pet’s behavior, progress, and any concerns that may arise.

7 Fostering Challenges
If you encounter any difficulties, notify the Foster Coordinator immediately. We will work to relocate your foster pet as quickly as possible and appreciate your patience as we find a solution.

8 No Foster-to-Adopt Option
Fostering a pet does not guarantee adoption. All interested adopters must complete One Love’s full adoption process before any decisions are made about the animal. If you are interested in adopting your foster you must let your foster coordinator know ASAP and put in an application!

9 Adoption Applications
Anyone—including friends or family—interested in adopting your foster pet must complete our standard adoption process. This includes submitting an application, interviewing with an Adoption Specialist, and completing a home visit. Please do not arrange meet-and-greets on your own. Adoption Events do not count as meet-and-greets unless an Adoption Coordinator is directly involved. Apply to Adopt today.

10 Resident Pet Health
All pets in your home—regardless of species—should be current on vaccinations, spayed and neutered. We also recommend the Bordetella vaccine for dogs to prevent kennel cough.

11 Resident Pet Liability
One Love is not responsible for any veterinary costs associated with illness or injury to your resident pets due to interactions with a foster pet. Foster families accept full responsibility for any such expenses.

12 Travel Plans
If you plan to travel, notify One Love as early as possible—ideally, at least two weeks in advance. If you’d like to take your foster pet with you (even for a short trip), you must get prior approval from One Love. If an adopter is interested during your travel period, arrangements may be made to temporarily place the pet with another foster for local availability. Request a Pet Sitter.

Get Well

Adoption Events!

Every month, we gather at our One Love Adoption Events, creating a fun and welcoming space for our foster pets to meet the community and show off their personalities. These events aren’t just a chance for socialization—they’re where magic happens and forever homes are found! By attending, your foster dog gets the opportunity to interact with potential adopters, gain confidence, and take steps toward the loving home they deserve. Time and again, our events have helped dogs find their perfect families, and your foster could be next. Join us and see the difference these moments make!
